Target diameter and the control method

Two other stand-data traditions — the German and Austrian target-diameter harvest (Zielstärke) and the Swiss control method (cut the increment) — on the same plots and tree records.

Both use the same plots and tree tally as BDq; only the objective and the reading differ. Target diameter is recommended in Germany (Bavaria included) and Austria, the control method in Switzerland provisional; BDq stays available beside them. Elsewhere either can still be chosen, with a caution that it was designed for another region.

Target diameter (Zielstärke)

Trees are harvested one by one when they reach the target diameter for their species. The result is the harvestable pool — stems at or above each species’ target — and progress toward it. Set the target diameters per species in the objective (defaults are provided; set yours).

Field app (Android)Target diameter › Tree.
Eligible is not chosen

A tree at target diameter is eligible; whether its value is still increasing enough to keep it is your call — the app flags it and never decides.

Control method (méthode du contrôle)

Growing stock is measured repeatedly on the same plots; the measured periodic increment says how much may be cut — cut the increment. Set the stand’s normal growing stock (basal area, default 26 m²/ha) in the objective; results show growing stock over time, increment and cut against increment.

Field app (Android)Control method › Plot visit.

Cut ÷ increment is shown for every stand-data method in Results (see Stand structure › Read the result).

What it doesn’t do (yet)
  • No value-increment model for target-diameter decisions.
  • No demo stand uses these methods, so their result pages are not shown here.
