Measurements

One guide per method — what it measures and why, where it is recommended, the kit, how plots are laid out, how to record it on the phone and how to read the result.

Methods, regions and honesty
  • Every topic has a method (a versioned protocol). A stand is recommended the method designed for where it is — worked out from its boundary — but you can choose any method; one designed for another region carries a caution.
  • Provisional provisional means the method’s thresholds or defaults await confirmation against the published documents or your own standard. The result is shown, labelled.
  • Every visit is scored with the method version in force on its date, so old results do not change when rules are corrected.

Which method where

What the app recommends for a new stand in each region (from its boundary, or the property’s country), and the other methods that fit there. Any method may still be chosen anywhere; one designed for another region carries a caution.

Tree marking is not a topic of its own: it uses the stand-data quota — see Tree marking.

The guides

Stand inventory and structure (BDq / reverse-J)Measure trees on permanent plots and see the stand’s diameter structure against a target reverse-J, its basal area, growth, dynamics, spatial structure and volume — with a marking quota per size band.10 minutes to readAFI indicators (irregular-forest monitoring)The French irregular-forest network’s approach — ten permanent plots, growing stock within a productive band, increment against capital, wood-size typology, stem quality and diameter-class transitions.5 minutes to readTarget diameter and the control methodTwo other stand-data traditions — the German and Austrian target-diameter harvest (Zielstärke) and the Swiss control method (cut the increment) — on the same plots and tree records.4 minutes to readTree markingMark trees in the field against the quota per size band, check the marking on control plots, use the relascope helpers, and turn the session into a recorded intervention once you confirm it.8 minutes to readBiodiversity — the Index of Biodiversity Potential (IBP)Score a stand’s potential to host woodland biodiversity from features you can see on one walk — the Irish CCF protocol (with the Northern Ireland list) or the IBP version for France, Benelux, Catalonia, Spain, Italy or the rest of Europe.9 minutes to readEstablishment surveySurvey a young planting or regeneration plot by plot — survival and stocking by species against the stand’s establishment profile, beating-up per species, height growth, weeds, browsing and damage, tree guards, and (optionally) woodland character — and get On track, Needs attention or Failing with the rules behind it.8 minutes to readBrowsing and herbivore impactAssess deer and livestock impact with WHIA v5 in Great Britain and Ireland, the regional method where one exists, the shared browsing capture elsewhere, or the nearest-neighbour damage survey for Scotland’s LISS.9 minutes to readNatural regenerationCount seedlings and saplings by species and height on small plots, and see stocking, the share of plots adequately stocked, what is getting away above browse height and — where recorded — natural versus planted stems.6 minutes to readDeadwoodMeasure lying deadwood on line-intersect transects and standing snags on plots, by decay class, and compare the volume with a benchmark of about 20 m³/ha.5 minutes to readTree health and damageRecord pests, diseases and damage with severity, incidence and photos, and follow them by agent over time.4 minutes to readWindblow — stability (H:D) and the post-storm windblow recordRead the stand’s slenderness (H:D) against exposure-adjusted thresholds before a storm, and map windblown areas and the standing edge after one — evidence for a felling licence or insurance conversation.6 minutes to readPost-harvest checkAfter a thinning or felling, check damage to the trees left standing and to regeneration, the condition of the extraction racks, and audit the stumps against what was marked and recorded.5 minutes to read
