Set up clients, properties, compartments and stands

Add a woodland owner, their property with its boundary, the compartments and the stands you will measure — drawing boundaries on the map or importing them.

The app follows the way woodlands are managed: a client (the owner) has properties (woodlands), divided into compartments, which hold the stands you measure and manage. Boundaries matter: a stand’s boundary decides which methods are recommended for it, sets the frame for plot layouts and gives every area figure.

Before you start
  • You are a forester or admin (owners cannot add anything).
  • Boundaries as GeoJSON (a polygon), or be ready to draw them. A zipped Shapefile, KML/KMZ or GPX can be brought in with Import anything.

Add a client

  1. Open Clients and choose New client. (From the first-run checklist, Add a client opens the same form.)
  2. Enter the owner’s name, and optionally a contact and email. The email is for your records; it does not create a login.
  3. Choose Create client. The client’s page opens.
Web appClients › New client.
  1. 1 New client opens this form
  2. 2 Owner name, contact and email
  3. 3 Create client

Add a property and its boundary

  1. On the client’s page choose New property and enter its name and two-letter country code (IE, GB, FR…). The country is the fallback for method recommendations when no boundary is drawn.
  2. Choose Draw polygon to draw the boundary on the map — or open Paste or upload GeoJSON.
  3. Paste a GeoJSON Polygon or MultiPolygon, or choose a .geojson file, then Use pasted GeoJSON. The app checks the geometry and tells you what is wrong rather than guessing.
  4. Choose Create property. The area is computed on the server from the boundary.
Web appA client’s page › New property.
  1. 1 Name and country (two-letter code)
  2. 2 Draw polygon on the map
  3. 3 Or paste / upload GeoJSON
  4. 4 Create property
Web appPaste or upload GeoJSON under the map.
  1. 1 Paste a GeoJSON Polygon or MultiPolygon
  2. 2 Use pasted GeoJSON
  3. 3 Or choose a .geojson file

Draw a boundary

Drawing works the same for a property, a compartment or a stand. The map shows the boundaries around it for context.

  1. Enter the code (here, compartment 9).
  2. Choose Draw polygon; it changes to Stop drawing.
  3. Click each corner on the map, in order. The count of vertices shows under the map; Clear starts again.
  4. Choose Finish polygon after at least three corners. The description above the map changes from No geometry to the polygon.
  5. Choose Create compartment (or Create property / Create stand).
Web appNew compartment, with a boundary being drawn: five corners placed inside the property.
  1. 1 Compartment code
  2. 2 Draw polygon (now Stop drawing)
  3. 3 Click each corner; the property is shown for context
  4. 4 Finish polygon
  5. 5 Create compartment
Tip — boundaries for navigation, not compliance mapping

Draw at the scale you need to find and measure the stand. For grant claim maps and statutory mapping keep using your GIS; you can bring its polygons in as GeoJSON or a zipped Shapefile.

Add compartments and stands

Web appA property: the map with its layers, and Compartments & stands.
  1. 1 Edit property (boundary, notes)
  2. 2 Map: select a stand here or in the list
  3. 3 New compartment
  4. 4 + stand adds a stand to that compartment
  5. 5 Open a stand
  1. Open the property from the client’s page. Edit property changes its name, notes or boundary.
  2. Use the map to find a stand: select it on the map or in the list.
  3. Choose New compartment, give it a code and a boundary, then Create compartment.
  4. Choose + stand on the compartment’s row.
  5. Open a stand with its name or Open.

What to enter for a stand

Web appNew stand in compartment 8.
  1. 1 Code and structure
  2. 2 Stage and exposure (exposure adjusts the H:D thresholds)
  3. 3 Species composition, % of basal area
  4. 4 Site context — shown beside results, never scored
  5. 5 Biodiversity area (counts toward the 15% guide)
  6. 6 Draw or paste the stand boundary
  7. 7 Create stand
  1. Code and structure — e.g. 7b, two-storey.
  2. Transformation stage and exposure. The stage (1–4) sets default variability for plot layouts; exposure adjusts the H:D stability thresholds.
  3. Species composition as codes and % of basal area, e.g. SS:60, OK:25, BI:15. The app spells it out on screen (“Sitka spruce 60%…”).
  4. Site context — soil group, peat depth, establishment, year established. Shown beside biodiversity results to help read them; never scored.
  5. Biodiversity area — tick if the stand is managed with biodiversity as the main objective. It counts toward the 15 % biodiversity area in the certification pack.
  6. The boundary — draw it or paste GeoJSON, as above.
  7. Choose Create stand. The stand opens on its Overview.

The new stand starts with the methods recommended for its location. Check them next: Choose methods and set targets.

The stand page

Web appEvery stand has five sections. Field work and Plan & evidence show counts of what needs you.
  1. 1 Five sections: Overview · Results · Field work · Plan & evidence · History
  2. 2 Next actions
  3. 3 Needs your attention
  4. 4 Ready for the next visit?
  1. Five sections — Overview (how it is doing and what needs you), Results (each topic over time), Field work (sample plots, records & photos, voice notes, marking, imports), Plan & evidence (methods & targets, planned work, work done, windblow, and a link to reports) and History (the timeline).
  2. Next actions — Plan a visit, Generate layout, Review incoming, Create report.
  3. Needs your attention — proposals to confirm, overdue plan lines, drifting targets, missing targets or plots.
  4. Ready for the next visit? — methods chosen, targets set, plots laid out.
What it doesn’t do (yet)
  • The map editor draws simple polygons and points; it does not edit vertices of an existing shape, snap to neighbours or split polygons — redraw it, or edit in GIS and paste the GeoJSON.
  • Boundaries are not checked for overlaps with neighbouring stands.
  • Deleting a client, property, compartment or stand is not offered on these screens.
